I have to admit I used ellipses and Em and En dashes without realizing there were rules—well, more like guidelines, really—concerning same. Good to know.
Do you have some gut sense of why you make the choices you do? It was interesting to rip this apart. And realize how often I do mentally visit the options! Guidelines, not rules. Yes.
This is wonderful! I find M dashes have a personality all their own and there are times nothing else will do. Would you be willing to unlock this post so I can share it widely? I like to be able to introduce others to the DIYMFA
The only thing about Em Dashes is that when I am writing with MS Word, I only seem to be able to manage one of them. I type a double dash and it turns into an m dash. But the second Em dash always remains a double dash. I have to go back and cut and paste proper Em dashes in, which I rarely do. I suppose there's a way around this but I haven't figured it out yet.
I'm glad you enjoy this post. It wasn't straightforward to put together. I'll send you a link to share with friends.
Funny... this is the first "members only" post this month. I'm struggling with what to keep for members only, and what to share. Originally, I thought I'd do only two posts/ months for "everyone" but I'm realizing how challenging it is to get new paying subscribers if I don't share more! But then it's not fair to those who have generously paid. A tough line!
I have to say it was nice to write a piece and not have to fill it with those awful little "Subscribe now!!!" (vaguely threatening!) buttons :) There's a reason I'm not in sales.
I am so grateful to those who are sharing The Unschool with others. Thank you!

Right! It usually ends up being just a long line.
A personality all their own--yes, that says it.

I was assuming that everything was locked and so I stopped sharing posts! I'm not sure how to tell!
I believe it says at the bottom of the post in the email: "This post is only for paying subscribers."
Oh! (Smacks head) Thanks!
Do feel free to share the posts of earlier this month--
Wow! Who knew! Thank you so much for this Alison. I confused the Em and En dash(es) all the time. I hope that stops now.
I came back to this today and found it very helpful. You can’t really rely on “it looks right.”
Thanks for letting me know--so good to know when pieces are useful!
