Sheryl's description of the writing process, and especially recognizing that she had the notes and location but not the story, was very informative AND reassuring.
As to writing/promoting mix, I wish writers did not have to promote. Of course, having almost everything rejected lets me escape promoting hell! (or would there be more acceptances if I could promote myself as some kind of cheery, lovable can't put the book down deep thinking easy reading writer who rides a unicycle backwards while kneading bread on a wooden board hung from my neck?)
Oh my goodness! Your description... love it. And know it.
Yes, when I say "promoting" I'm talking about both before and after the sale of a work... so sending out to FIND a publishing home for a project is definitely part of it. The harder part, too, to my mind. More on this is the post to come... I'm struggling with this post, I must say.
Thank you so much Alison! I appreciate you!
Thank you for sharing and posting this piece, Walter!
Thanks for the opportunity to talk about picture books, Alison.
Sheryl, sorry for the delayed response--been off hiking, and chased home by the smoke :(
I am so thankful for your generosity in sharing your process here! Can't wait to pick up a copy and share it with the great-nephews!
You give so much to our writing community. Happy to be able to contribute.
Thank you, Sheryl! That means so much!
Also--have to say, I love your profile pic. So good to see!

It IS reassuring, truly.
