Alison, thanks so much for including me on this list of wonderful newsletters. I know and subscribe to Jolene’s and look forward to checking out the others you’ve listed. Happy Thanksgiving, and here’s to the continued growth and success of the Unschool for Writers!
I spent $40 on a hardcover novel today for the next read for my book club. I believe in buying books, though, as I actively support other writers.
A subscription for my newsletter is $60 Canadian, which comes to about $45 USD... so $5 more than the one book I just bought. I write and post weekly at least, and have an archive of almost 450 pieces, which can keep a reader busy all organized into annual indexes and topics. ALSO, we have online workshops. Some writers take part in these, and the type of feedback that they're getting is worth hundreds of dollars, if they hired an editor to review. There are monthly prompts, and--as long as reader-writers are active--solid opps for growth and knowledge.
Altogether, a good "deal."
I do understand having a budget. I'm a writer, too, and I don't do the "heavy sell" stuff, so I don't make a lot. But I make an effort to do an "arts tithe"--that is, spend about 10% of my income on subscribing to newsletters, buying books, going out to hear local live music (with an awareness to support the venue, too), local theatre productions...whatever bit I can do as an artist to support others. Art is what I want to see in my world, and I understand that I need to support others in that too. The rest, I get from the library--one institution I am beyond grateful for.
Wishing you the best, Russell, even if you can only afford one or two here to support; I do get it :)
Thanks, Alison, I'm an old history major too, so I've signed up for Non-Boring History. Coincidentally, I've just heard about a history book in the same style, Republic by Alice Hunt about the Cromwellian Interregnum, which I may check out.
Hi Alison, thanks so much for your kind words about Tall and Tiny Tales. I’ll be sure to check out some of your other suggestions. Wishing you all the best for the holidays 💛
Thank you for the shout-out for Desperate Writer, Alison, and for alerting me to several other newsletters that look exactly like the kind of writers and thinkers I would most enjoy. What a treat.
Greetings from Okinawa! Thanks so much for including Desperate Writers Alison. I will definitely check out all of your other suggestions. Also loving your own newsletter Unschool. I so appreciate how supportive you are of writers. It’s can be a tricky ole business but, my, such a privilege at the same time.

Wishing you a very good Thanksgiving indeed, yes. Thank you, Andrew!
I agree, there's a lot of great stuff on Substack, but who can afford it? It may be a great platform for writers but it's lousy for readers.
