Question #4 in our Q&A series is all about feeling ‘frozen’ on Substack, and the workings of other platforms. It’s made me think that perhaps we need a thread dedicated to Substack-navigation questions.
Please share any such questions and your experiences here—
Thanks for this dedicated post Alison! As a new Substack writer, my question is mainly on growing engagement/readership -> what are effective strategies for growing your subscriber base and increasing your audience (ie. how to increase your discoverability on the platform outside of those you know IRL).
In one post she spoke to the significance in adding tags that correspond with the categories on Substack... otherwise, readers interested in those categories really don't have a hope of finding you! I was being rather lazy about that, but she makes it clear. Since then I've been inching up in "Education." I had no idea.
Between Linda's work and Walter Rhein's there's a lot of information.
As much as I find it time-consuming to do "Notes," I do find it introduces readers to The Unschool.
Any sort of connecting--such as these Q&A times--opens doors, too.
Linda Caroll is SO worth following/subscribing! Dilettante that I am, I have not taken full advantage of her wisdom, but she has plenty to offer. I could not edit my comment about Kristi, so wanted to make it clear I was ‘adding to the list’, not offering an alternative. 😉
I hope the ‘copy link’ works — she is a tech-savvy writer and is truly worth following.
I am retired and dabble in all things writing, but she has helped me figure out a few essentials. If I wanted to expand my reach on Substack, she is where I would start.

Before you post, check through "settings" (lower left-hand corner) and in "add tags" MAKE SURE YOU DO!
Linda Caroll has an excellent newsletter! https://lindac.substack.com/

Very good! Yes! :)
I highly recommend a Medium OG, Kristi Keller, and her “Unstack Substack” newsletter; https://open.substack.com/pub/unstackit?r=b5r8a&utm_medium=ios
