Once, in my teens, when my family had all gone away for the day, and I was the only one home, I lost my key somewhere out in the big world.
I remember circling the house, testing door knobs, looking for a cracked-open window, any point of entry. Then finding the one window that could be jiggled just so (I knew my big brother had done it; why couldn’t I?)
