Welcome to the Unschool for Writers. I have published from picturebooks, middle-grade/ YA novels, to short stories and memoir for adults, and taught in the MFA program at the University of British Columbia for 14 years.
I believe that writing is birthed mostly in the desire to do it—that drive that some of us are born with, aka “talent.” After that, it’s a lot of study and passion and work. For each of us, on our path, it’s a balance of reading the best out there—others’ works—and absorbing that work on all levels, from intellectually to scrutinizing our gut reactions.
And then there is the learning, for which many attend school and programs; that is this piece, the Unschool for Writers. So many cannot afford school, or don’t have the time. Or they might recognize that the institution might not be the best place to nurture and challenge the artist in the optimal ways. (That’s the “unschool” piece.)
And then there is the last piece, and most important: Write.
Every week I will be posting another piece (and more) on some aspect of learning to write, and every month a newsletter. The above triad of read, learn, practice will be considered over the course of each month. Ultimately, I’m hoping to build a community here, so that writers can connect in a way that will be meaningful for their work.
Please do not hesitate to share any questions. Or suggestions for pieces you would like to see! Let’s build this.
