This post written in response to a paid subscriber’s request.

The dream goes something like this: you write a piece, you re-write and polish. It’s ready. You send it in to a contest. The piece wins! It’s published, and there is prize money—some decent amount. Some editor or agent notices, contacts you, and… beautiful things happen!
